Your local leaders Sisters have big plans By Georgia O’Connor-Harding, Andrew King SISTERS CATHERINE Chu and Linda Chen have made their entrance into local body politics at the same time but on different community boards. At 20-years-old Miss Chu is the youngest community board member in the city, representing Riccarton, while sister Ms Chen, 27, was elected to represent Harewood. Ms Chen received 3391 votes to take her place on the FendaltonWaimairi-Harewood Community Board. Aaron Campbell will take the spot after receiving 2602 votes. Miss Chu, a Westpac business bank manager, received 2074 votes getting the nod alongside long-time local body politician Helen Broughton receiving 2457 to take the two spots on the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board. Ms Chen moved to New Zealand with her parents from South Korea when she was five-years-old while

Miss Chu was born in Christchurch. Both sisters said they were “very excited” to be on the community board. Said Ms Chen: “I am very excited my sister is on a community board as well as she is so young.” She said her priority is to get traffic lights for the Breens, Gardiners and Harewood Rds intersection. “I am hoping, being the youngest on the Harewood board, to utilise that youth and energy and be that approachable person that really makes a difference,” she said. At the top of Miss Chu’s list is to bring ethnic groups together, and deal with traffic congestion and parking issues. Having a strong interest in foreign language and culture, Miss Chu has been studying Chinese and Japanese part time at Canterbury University on top of her job. “From a really young age I had enjoyed listening to other people and I was really excited when I knew I could be able to help people make their lives better,” Miss Chu said. Former Shirley-Papanui Community Board chairman Mike Davidson has been promoted to city councillor for the Papanui ward. Other than that it is business as usual, with Crs Pauline Cotter and Raf Manji retaining their seats and Cr Jamie Gough elected unopposed. There are some new faces on the community boards, though, including John Stringer for Papanui, Sam MacDonald and Shirish Paranjape for Waimairi. MP FOR WAIMAKARIRI CHAT WITH MATT Waimakariri electorate is a dynamic place to represent. Looking back over the past two years on the second anniversary of being elected as local MP, I can say that the electorate’s rapid growth, mix of peri-urban and rural areas, and vibrant regeneration post-earthquake presented a unique set of circumstances which shaped my response as MP. Based on my experience during my first year, I learnt it is important for an MP to keep connected to a range of communities across the electorate at ground level, picking up on issues that are relevant to constituents. And I’m not afraid to try new ways to keep connected. My mid-winter evening meetings allowed me to meet people on their patch at a time that suits them. I also enjoy creating opportunities to meet with different demographic groups, including business, superannuates and youth.

By the end of this year, I would have invited over 12,000 superannuates to meet with me at my over 65s coffee mornings. The opening of my Belfast office on 17 October will help me be more accessible to my constituents in Northern Christchurch. I will retain my offices in Kaiapoi and Rangiora, as well as my constituent community caravan in Woodend and Rangiora. I look forward to meeting with you in my new office. I enjoyed collecting for Arthritis New Zealand recently in Northwood and catching up in passing with familiar faces from my community constituent caravan, my coffee mornings in Belfast, my youth roadshows in Northern Christchurch and my business meetings in the area. Keown back on the council benches By Andrew King AFTER THREE years on the council table sideline, Aaron Keown is back. Mr Keown was elected onto the Sir Bob Parker council in 2010 before losing in the 2013 election. But on Saturday, he was returned as Harewood Ward councillor with 2934 votes, ahead of Faimeh Burke (1651), Brian Garguilo (1008), Rod S Cameron (466) and Rod D Cameron (241). He has also been re-elected to the Canterbury District Health Board. Mr Keown said one of his priorities would be to try and reconnect the city council with the Minister supporting Greater Christchurch Regeneration, Gerry Brownlee. “I will be more vocal with the Government and the first thing I will ask minister Brownlee is if we can get regular meetings with the city councillors and community board members,” he said. Mr Keown said when he was a city councillor between 20102013, there were regular meetings with Mr Brownlee and the city council. That had not happened in the council’s last term, he said.

He also wants Christchurch to be a focal point for movie making to help bring more innovative jobs to the city. Roads, rates, waterway protection would also be a priority. Innes Ward’s Pauline Cotter was re-elected onto the council table with 3814 votes, ahead of her only rival, Mel Rodricks (755). Cr Cotter said this term is about reaping the rewards of the hard work they did last term.

The Papanui Ward will be represented by new councillor Mike Davidson, who received 3305 votes from former Conservative Party chairman John Stringer (2356). He said it was great to make the step up from his role as chairman of the now defunct Shirley-Papanui Community Board. He is the son of Mayor Lianne Dalziel’s husband Rob Davidson. be centred around improving traffic conditions in the north of the city as well as keeping rates low. Raf Manji (4073) will have another three years at the table winning by 2320 votes over Anthony Rimell (1753) in the Waimairi Ward. “It is a new day for this council, we don’t have as many problems as we did three years ago so it is about moving forward,” Cr Manji said.

The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board becomes the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board and the Shirley-Papanui Community Board becomes the PapanuiInnes Community Board. Fendalton-WaimairiHarewood Community Board has four new faces joining two returning from last term. Bridget Williams (4838) and David Cartwright (3935) were re-elected in the Fendalton Ward and will be joined by city councillor Jamie Gough who was elected unopposed. Sam MacDonald (3398) and Shirish Paranjape (2840) will represent the Waimairi Ward. The Papanui-Innes Community Board has one new-comer, Mr Stringer (2553) getting the nod in the Papanui Ward. Mr Lawrence has been entering his gardens in competitions since 1973 and said he normally enjoys a “good success rate.” “It is nice to be recognised for the hard work that goes into

preparing a garden good enough to enter,” he said. His work does not just stay in the confines of his own yard – he gets about the neighbourhood taking care of other residents’ lawns, planting roadside flowers, and even convincing the city council last year to plant some trees on the street. “It is about giving back to where you live,” he said. Village wins gold MERIVALE Retirement Village has won gold in the Canterbury Horticultural Society Spring Garden Awards thanks to one man’s dedication to making the grounds his own. Entries for the awards closed on September 28 and judging finished on October 2. Village gardener Joseph Austin has “pulled out all the stops” to get the gardens ready for the competition but, awards or not, he would have still had them in “gold condition” according to the regional manager for Merivale, Terrace View and Willowlea retirement villages Jon Amesbury RN. “He has done an amazing job and we are thrilled that he has been recognised,” he said. “It is so vital the grounds look good for the health and wellbeing of the residents.” Mr Austin is in his fourth year at the village and said the award made him feel like all his hard work had paid off. “I have always been interested in gardening, seeing all the colours and watching those in the village enjoy the flowers,” he said. News Fighting cancer with fitness WHEN MAIREHAU resident Isobel Stout was diagnosed with breast cancer, fighting the disease and getting through the gruelling treatment regime was her main focus. Six months of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and five weeks of radiation left her “absolutely shattered” and she was not prepared for the challenging transition back to everyday life. It was not until Ms Stout, 50, discovered a new exercise class for recovering breast cancer patients at St George’s Cancer Care Centre that she began to get her life back. Recently, she completed a charity bike ride up Coronet Peak, raising $4000 for the Pinc & Steel Cancer Rehabilitation Trust. She is a senior environmental health officer at the city council and was one of the first patients to sign up to the initiative in which pilates, yoga and cardiovascular exercises are delivered by trained oncology physiotherapists. For Ms Stout, the main benefits of St George’s exercise classes were restoring confidence and getting her physical strength back after treatment. “I had no trust in myself

during treatment and surgery. Forty-five other Christchurch women have since completed the 10-week programme, which is offered free of charge to eligible patients due to funding from the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation and the Pinc & Steel

Cancer Rehabilitation Trust. It is the only programme of its kind in Christchurch, and plans are in place to introduce a similar initiative for men recovering from prostate cancer. Oncology physiotherapist Julee Binns said there is a real need for cancer patients to have access to specialised exercise programmes post-treatment. “The side effects of cancer treatment, for example scarring and lymphedema, limit the ability to exercise and can have a big impact on quality of life,” she said. Practice manager Viv Ali said the clinic’s long-term vision is to develop a wider programme for patients that incorporates exercise, yoga and mindfulness. Exercise has been shown to improve outcomes for cancer patients both during and after treatment. Some benefits include decreased fatigue, an increased sense of well-being, improved functional ability and reduced risk of osteoporosis following chemotherapy. International studies of women diagnosed with breast cancer indicate a 50 to 53 per cent increased chance of survival if regular, moderate intensity exercise is undertaken.

Zanzibar’s return to Merivale By Bridget Rutherford ZANZIBAR IS coming back to Merivale. Bardello, which sits between Aikmans Bar and Eatery and JDV Cafe, Restaurant and Bar is being turned into a pizza and pasta restaurant and will be re-named Zanzibar. It was the name of Aikmans Bar and Eatery about 10 years ago, when it was owned by Bob Kyle and before it was reverted back to its original name. Renovations to the restaurant are currently being done. It is hoped it will be opened in about two weeks. Peter Edmonds, who owns the neighbouring JDV Cafe, Restaurant and Bar, bought both Aikmans and Bardello this year with Frank van Schaijik. Fendalton city councillor Jamie Gough said the name change was a blast from the past and brilliant news. He said Aikmans was named Zanzibar for a “long time.” “I always still incorrectly called it Zanzibar, long after it had changed,” he said.

Rangi students forge relationships with island businesswomen RANGI RURU students have been bolstering their relationships with women in business in Samoa, spending two weeks immersed in the culture. The school has had a long time relationship with women in business in Samoa and students stayed in villages and visited workplaces in the Samoan Islands. Students were billeted in pairs with families in the village of Patamea, a small, rural village on the island of Savaii. Upon arriving in Apia, they met with Women in Business Development Organisation representatives and heard more about their business initiatives in the country. They worked alongside local people via their relationship with WIBDO which involved visiting a factory where coconut oil is processed for the Body Shop. They also saw how the mulberry tree is transformed into tapa cloth, a traditional form of Samoan clothing used for important ceremonial occasions and spending a day at the local primary school. RICCARTON-Waimairi Lions were one of seven clubs around the city to respond to an “SOS” call from Age Concern Canterbury. The clubs pulled together $50,000 over a period of six months, enough to buy Age Concern a new 12-seater minivan. Keys to the mini-van were handed over to Age Concern representatives recently. Riccarton-Waimairi, Christchurch-Pegasus, Lyttelton, Ferrymead, Christchurch South, Christchurch-Seaview, and New Brighton clubs all pitched in an average of about $3000 each for the new van. New Brighton Lions Club member Warren Glassey said Age Concern Canterbury needed the van to provide transport for elderly locals

who had become “housebound” following the earthquakes. “Age Concern said there was a significant number of elderly people that were badly affected post-earthquakes that have now become housebound . . . we know it will be used for the next 15 years, five days a week at least,” he said. Within six months, the clubs raised the $50,000 needed to purchase a new Ford Transit 12-seater mini-van. This included a $20,000 donation from an international Lions charitable trust. The last $10,000 came in the form of sponsorship from Colliers International; Chatswood Retirement Village, Opawa; and Willowlea Retirement Village, Shirley.

Readers respond to an article on whether motorists should be charged for parking at Jellie Park Recreation and Sports Centre or be given free things if they cycle or take the bus, in a bid to reduce parking issues at the facility. Gary Knight, of Hoon Hay – While the issue of car parking fees at Jellie Park evolves as a platform of debate, reality must prevail. The innovation by the Fendalton-Waimari Community Board to offer free food, towels and discount cards for those choosing to cycle to this venue, while commendable, is rife with anomalies. It would be virtually impossible to police those who cycled also any arriving there and producing a helmet merely to capitalise on the discount offer. Cycling or utilising public transport will always be ongoing by those motivated to choose this option of travel, devoid of the necessity for discounts for this realistic decision. If 114 car parks is deemed insufficient to cater for 238,024 personnel between the summer months of December 2015 and March 2016, then the reality is to add more. However, charging a fee for them is a retrograde step and contravenes the very nature

Some of the people who attend classes at Jellie Park are recovering from hip or knee replacements and I don’t think their surgeons would be pleased to know that they are riding a bike after all their expertise in fixing their limbs. The income of the cafe there would suffer also as most of us have coffee after the classes and if we had to pay for parking I am sure we would be going some where else for coffee. As it is election time again I think they should be directing community awareness in a better direction. I am sure they would not like to see their parents/grandparents biking to an exercise class to keep themselves fit and out of the health system.

By Mark Thomas – Fire Risk Management Officer AN INCIDENT in Spreydon last Friday had many aspects of slapstick comedy, sadly without any of the humour. A young lady had oil heating on the stove which ignited while she wasn’t in the room. Like nearly anyone else in the same situation she tried to put the fire out. In this instance she used a towel. Now I’m not sure if she moistened the cloth first because the towel also ignited. So she then threw it out the door. Burning oil ignited the wall linings. Which resulted in the range hood being destroyed. Addington’s crew extinguished the fire and the poor occupant was taken to hospital apparently in shock. What went wrong? Like in so many even more serious incidents not a lot. The first thing is to stay in the kitchen while any combustible is being heated. The second is to completely cover the burning pot, preferably with something that won’t burn,

like a lid or oven tray. That’s really all. There’s not a huge difference between a fire that’s a nuisance and one that’s a tragedy. That’s why fire is so damned dangerous. It’s pet and animal time. And of course it’s duckling season again which meant one careless ducking pulled from a hole in Goodman St, Burwood, last Monday evening. Almost certainly won’t be the last.

TRIAL: Some of Christchurch’s grassy riverbanks will be left uncut on a trial basis for environmental reasons.

Mr “Deano Yipadee” will be promoting the release of Jingle Bells, Rudolf Smells, his new book. It is taken from a song off his Christmas album that went to No 1 on the iTunes best sellers chart last December in the United Kingdom. The story follows Santa and his smelly-bottomed reindeer, Rudolph, on an adventure that finds Christmas being saved by Rudolph’s bionic trump. “I’m thrilled to be coming home. It’s the perfect time as my daughters both are Kiwis that

have never been to New Zealand or had a hot Christmas,” he said. Mr O’Brien was born in Mosgiel, Otago, but has been living in the UK for 15 years. He has another two books being released in 2017 – Neenaw the Fire Engine and Stink-O-Saurus. In 2013, his debut album, Yes, I Can! Club, hit the top spot in the UK Children’s Charts and was followed by an invite to perform at the world-famous Glastonbury music festival alongside The Rolling Stones, magician Dynamo and others. In addition to several subsequent chart-topping albums, he also created an album full of UK TV stars for charity.

Normally the grassed banks of the city’s waterways are kept closely mown. City council land drainage manager Keith Davison said the city council had assessed the need to mow the banks due to concerns raised and had decided to stop grass cutting between the waterway and the top of the banks in the middle

and lower reaches of the Avon and Styx Rivers. It had also decided to stop grass cutting between the waterway and the top of the banks within trial areas of the Heathcote River and Steamwharf Stream. “Our plan is to monitor the impact and use what we learn to make a decision about whether we permanently cease mowing the banks. This is not about saving money; it is about doing what is best for the ecology of our waterways,’’ Mr Davison said.

News Bowie tribute picked up Fashion By Annabelle Dick A NUMBER of Burnside High School and St Margaret’s College students will feature in an international documentary after their David Bowie tribute song got picked up by an Italian filmmaker. The song, Starman in the Stars, was written and performed by Mandi Miller, Mark Wilson, their band All the Queen’s Horses and a choir of school pupils. An Italian film project, Ritratti, will use the music video in a collective multi-media film called BowieNext. Ms Miller, of Woolston, is overjoyed with the news, saying she had hoped the track would get snapped up and used. “I have been promoting it and been trying to find people that are making David Bowie documentaries, so this is really exciting,” she said. Cashmere High School students Kirsty Tobbell, Emily Tobbell and Elizabeth Whittington, and Somerfield School pupil Connor Tobbell were a part of the chorus choir.

Pupils from Sumner, Redcliffs and Heathcote Valley schools and Villa Maria College also helped record the track at Orange Studios in Ferrymead. It was made as a tribute to the late David Bowie who died in January this year. “They all learnt the chorus and held down the main melody and I improvised over top of them. Their voices really stand out,” Ms Miller said. “The added element of the children in the video was really significant to me because Bowie was still making music up until he passed and I think they’re a new generation of Bowie fans.” Ms Miller has been a singing teacher at Sumner School for nearly ten years and she also teaches at Redcliffs School. The 26 students that feature are current and former singing students of hers. “There are some really good voices out there and the children are such good kids. They’re kind and considerate people but vocally I’ve had some amazing singers come through,” she said.

Brydon new Black Stick By Gordon Findlater HIGH SCHOOL Old Boys-Burnside player David Brydon has been named in the Black Sticks team to play Australia in November. The 20-year-old was named in the national team for the first time on the back of a standout year which has saw him win the most valuable player award at last month’s National Hockey League. The former St Bede’s College student received a phone call from Black Sticks coach Colin Batch early last week to deliver the good news. “It was definitely in the back of my mind. It’s nice to now know that I’m going to get that opportunity,” said Brydon. The side to take on Australia is a relatively young one. Fellow Canterbury Cavaliers player and former St Andrew’s College student Sam Lane and Dominic Newman will also make there international debuts against Australia. The three were part of the Canterbury team that won this year’s under-21 national tournament. Nick Haig has also made the Black Sticks squad and was part of the Canterbury Cavaliers men’s team which finished second at the NHL with Brydon, Lane and Newman. The team that has won six consecutive Canterbury titles finished second at nationals two years ago but were looking to improve on last year’s tournament which saw them fall outside the top eight. In their first pool match St Margaret’s were thrashed 2052 by tournament winner’s St Kentigern College, of Auckland.

They recovered to win their final two pool games against Palmerston North Girls’ High School 39-27 and Dunedin’s St Hilda’s Collegiate 33-30 and advance to the quarter-finals. There they were defeated 18-38 by Auckland’s St Mary’s College. On the final day of competition, St Margaret’s met Rotorua Girls’ High School in a playoff for seventh and eighth. They led by just one goal at halftime. However, a strong finish to the match saw St Margaret’s win comfortably 35-22. St Andrew’s College also attended the tournament and finished 15th.

Looking after top tennis players Bishopdale sports store owner Tony Ralfe has attended about 20 Davis Cup ties. In his 50 years of restringing tennis rackets he has met some of the world’s top players and enjoys his job every minute of every day. He chats with Andrew King about memorable Davis Cup matches, his favourite player and what he is looking forward to this year I hear you are a bit of a tennis legend around these parts, how did you get started in the sport? My mum and dad were keen tennis players. Dad was one of the top in North Otago and my mum played in representative grades. So myself and two sisters were carted around tennis courts and lived, ate and slept tennis from a very early age. So you were brought up on the court hitting a ball around? When we moved to Lowcliffe, near Ashburton, when I was around eight we had the tennis courts about 10m from the back door of the house. So we could just walk outside and start smacking a ball. Was a professional career ever on the cards for you? Oh, it could have been, but I decided to get into retail and then more into the administration

side of things. I have been with Canterbury Tennis since 1968 on the competition’s committee and then into management from 1969 and been there ever since. I have been the Canterbury Tennis president for the last 11 years, so I have spent a few hours sitting around meeting tables. Was tennis your main sport when your were growing up? I played a bit of everything, being from a country school, but tennis was my main sport in the summer. I played some rugby when I was in Southland and then hockey when we moved to Lowcliffe. Then we moved to Christchurch and I have been here ever since. When did you get into stringing rackets? It was 50 years ago this year. It was my first job and back in those days it was all hand stringing,

then the machines came in and once there were metal rackets, you couldn’t hand string those so we did less and less. I worked for Anderson & Hill, under a guy called Harry Hill. He was one of the best hand stringers in the world at the time, well I thought he was, if not the best.

So Harry would have been a bit of inspiration for you when you were starting out? He was unbelievably quick, he could hand string 10 rackets in a little over two hours. It was a real art. In those days it was real gut that you used. One night we had a guy walk in at 10 to nine asking

for a squash racket to be done, well 10 minutes later he was walking back out with it ready to go. It was the biggest tennis shop in town by a country mile back then. It was on Manchester St, then moved to Cashel St, before a lot of the other franchises started up. Unfortunately, Harry passed on a few years ago but he was a true inspiration. I’ve been told you have attended a few Davis Cup matches in your time, how many are you up to now? It is around the 19-20 mark, I need to go back through the records but it has been close to 20. What is your most memorable match? New Zealand-England at Pioneer Stadium. Unsure of the year but it was a match Chris Lewis didn’t play particularly well and his mother nearly nailed him to the door. “Don’t you ever play like that again,” I believe were the words out of her mouth. I’ll never forget that. But that is sport, every athlete has their off day. The 1979 match between New Zealand, Australia at the King Edward Barracks in Christchurch, we had a lot of rain and it started to leak in through the roof and flood the court.

is no racket What was your role at that tournament? I was the main stringer for the players for about the last 20 ties in Christchurch. I have never missed one. You would have met a few big names of the game over the years? Yes, well for the last 12 years I have been going to Auckland and working at what is now known as the ASB Open as the senior stringer. Done some big names up there, and we have Serena Williams coming this year so there is a good chance I’ll get to string hers. I have done Venus’ the last few years and David Ferrer a couple of times as well as Caroline Wozniacki. Do you get to have a chat to them, maybe give them some advice? (Laughing) Sometimes, but a lot of the time the coaches do the donkey work, dropping the rackets off. But generally somewhere along the line we run into them and have a chat. What do you talk about? Oh, anything. From tennis to things they have seen in New Zealand, what they like about the country. All sorts really. Who is your favourite player? It has to be Roger Federer you

can’t go past him. He is a model tennis player and it is a real shame the kids don’t try to emulate him rather than some of these other ones that are not quite in the same league behaviour-wise. Like Nick Kyrgios? Yes, well kids copy those kind of idiots on the court rather than the good ones. Have you ever seen Feds even hit a ball in anger ever, it doesn’t happen. Or query a line call in an aggressive manner? Some of these other guys are doing it all the time. What about New Zealand players? Chris Lewis would be one of our best players. Also Brett Steven. Those guys used to get off the plane and ask if Tony was the stringer. Once they knew I was they didn’t have many worries past that (laughing). Have you been to many major tournaments in a professional capacity? I went to Wimbledon in 2001. I went into the stringing room there after a couple of days. The guy in there said he could of given me a job. I told him that’s why I had left it a few days before coming in here because I wanted to watch, not work. It was nice watching for a change. I would tell the guys sitting next to me when ever a

player broke their string. They would tell me I had good hearing and would reply breaking strings were music to my ears. How many rackets do you think you have restrung in your 50 years? I have no idea. It would be certainly a few. We do about

300 in the two weeks I am in Auckland for the open. I think I do about 1500 a year. Have you ever tightened them too much and had a player complain? There was a young Spanish player back when Rob Muldoon was prime minster, I can’t

remember his name. He started on about 66 pounds and when the tournament was winding up he was on 42 pound. He kept coming back telling me it is too tight. But that doesn’t happen to often. I would imagine your kids would have been into the game? Yes, I have two boys, who have grown up and flown the coup now. They enjoyed the game when they were kids. So 50 years in the business, you must be closing to putting your feet up? I am looking at moving into retirement. Selling my store up and chase a few more tournaments. I can cart my machine around and string a few rackets for people. At any point during those 50 years, did you about getting another job? (Laughing) Well, that would have been an idea, probably would have got paid better. But I have had a real interest in sport so this was the place for me. I’m not very good on horse racing, but most others I can tell you a thing or two about it. My wife is always groaning we have the sports channel on at home but never mind. We watch other things sometimes.

Classic TV comedy on stage Dad’s Army Produced by Cas ‘n’ Ova Productions Directed by Craig Hutchison and Rebecca Wakelin Reviewed by Georgia O’Connor-Harding Cas ‘n’ Ova has put on a humorous production about an endearing army of men too old or “unfit” for military service during World War 2. If you didn’t laugh throughout the show, you were certainly in the minority. Chuckles could be heard for most of the production, which I am sure would have been an interesting experience for some of the fairly new actors to the showbiz scene. Based on the BBC comedy, Dad’s Army recounts the misadventures of a voluntary defence force known as the Home Guard. Considering some of the actors had barely any acting experience at all, the cast put in a solid effort. And it was great a seasoned director such as Craig Hutchison took on board fresh-faced actors willing to give theatre a go.

particularly during a comical but disastrous date with Mrs Gray where Mainwaring was continuously interrupted by his soldiers.

Like many of the cast, MacLeod had an uncanny resemblance to the original Captain Mainwaring, played by Arthur Lowe, which I think any

Dad’s Army fan would adore. It was unfortunate MacLeod was dealing with a distracting cough, which is understandably difficult to deal with. He did his best, but it tainted what was a strong performance. Peter Watt, playing the role of Private Frazer, was a hit with the audience. Being a Scot himself, his accent was spot-on – but it was that classic blokey demeanour that gave him a great stage presence. Occasionally it looked as though the actors missed their cues and there seemed to be a bit of over-acting but, at the same time, these small imperfections added to the show’s comical value. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this show. It wasn’t a full-scale professional production but the cast deserves to be acknowledged, particularly for their charisma. It was clear they enjoyed being up on stage and I think they would have had a lot of fun putting this show together. Go to the show not for perfection, but for a good night out. •The show finished on Saturday.

In the front row at fashion week Annabelle Dick reports on Ballantynes Fashion Week WALKING THROUGH the doors of The Contemporary Lounge late September, two polite doormen welcomed me and ushered me upstairs towards the launch party of Ballantynes Fashion Week. I was poured a glass of Daniel Le Brun bubbles and escorted to my seat in the atrium, where beautiful white flowers adorned the main stage and a long catwalk came out from in between the flora. There I saw hundreds of eager fashionistas lined up like dominoes along the catwalk in wait of the latest spring and summer trends. As luxurious as it was, the event wasn’t restricted to the elite in search of the most avantgarde pieces for their designer wardrobe. Ballantynes Fashion Week was more of a come one, come all-

type affair. The opening night show was full of colour, excitement and fresh ideas. The show felt like a garden tea party on a warm

garments with just a hint of denim to floor-length denim dresses. My favourite ensemble of the evening was the resort look, featuring the Isaac Lulu Vinnie pant. The model was dressed impeccably head to toe and I was an absolute sucker for those wide leg pants – those are my biggest must-have at the moment. While I’m a big advocate of black and white, I felt the monochrome wear was a bit off. The prints screamed “I’m in my

early 40s and I work in an office” and the outfits looked shifty and uncomfortable. Ballantynes Fashion Week also featured a mums and bubs day, a menswear and beer event and an Art in Fashion Day for Ara Institute of Canterbury students to showcase their garments. This is the second year Ballantynes has hosted a fashion week so maybe they’re still trying to find their feet, but I see their annual event, like a good wine, getting better with time.

Sporty flavour to chic Citroen DS3 By Ross Kiddie IN A perfect world, Citroen’s desire to have two marketing platforms globally would seem easy. Citroen effectively have two ranges – Citroen and DS. DS is an offshoot which produces cars just a little right of centre, trendy, fashionable and sporty. The PSA Group, which is the parent of company of Citroen and DS, has made it quite clear they would like to have separate showrooms for each brand, but here in New Zealand that’s an expensive investment, and one which would be hard to justify given the historically low volumes of Citroen sold here. And if you take into account there are also some joint dealerships for both Citroen and Peugeot, the latter also part of the PSA Group, the infrastructure involved in keeping all three brands separate would be rather costly and complicated. That being the case, to purchase a DS at present, buyers need to go to the Citroen dealership, and to my way of thinking, that’s the best scenario, while DS does stand out as being individual, the cars are still in many ways fundamentally Citroen. I’m due to drive the DS4 Crossback and DS5 soon, this evaluation focuses on the baby of the series, the DS3, a small, funky, threedoor hatchback which utilises the Citroen C3 and Peugeot 208 platform. The DS3 also gets the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder engine of Citroen’s Cactus, C4 and the Peugeot 208. It is an engine which punches well above its weight. It is rated at an amazing 81kW and has a fabulous 205Nm of torque available at just 2000rpm. The latter is thanks to a fairly hefty turbocharged boost and if you take into account the light weight of the car at just 975kg, it has remarkable performance and economy. It will accelerate from a standstill to 100km/h in 9.9sec, and scamper through a highway overtake in 6sec (80km/h to 120km/h). Response to throttle request is pretty much instant, drive is through a six-speed automatic gearbox, and it is a transmission which doesn’t soak up too much out of the engine, the entire acceleration process is fluid.

Citroen also claim a 4.7litre per 100km (60mpg) combined cycle fuel usage average. During my time with the test car the consumption readout was constantly listing around 6l/100km (47mpg) with 4.4l/100km (64mpg) available at a steady 100km/h, the engine quite relaxed at that speed turning over at just 2100rpm. • Price – Citroen DS3, $42,990 • Dimensions – Length, 3948mm; width, 1710mm; height, 1483mm • Configuration – Three-cylinder, frontwheel-drive, 1199cc, 81kW, 205Nm, sixspeed automatic. • Performance – 0-100km/h, 9.9sec • Fuel usage – 4.7l/100km

There’s no mistaking that something just a little bit different sits under the bonnet, the wee threepotter carries the traditional harmonics which sit with that configuration. I’m not saying it is noisy or unnatural, but it gets about its task with a feeling that is uncharacteristic for an internal combustion engine. That aside, it is a sensation I quite like; I’ve driven many three-potters over the years, one of my daily commute work vehicles was a Suzuki Alto, and I came to really enjoy the honesty of its three-cylinder engine, they have a lot of torque low down and that is where you need power. The DS3’s unit operates effectively at low revs, and that flexibility also contributes to those respectable fuel usage figures. And while it prefers to work at the lower part of the rev band, it will sing to the top end readily boosting all of the way without complaint. High performance versions of the DS3 in over-

seas markets have included a Racing version. Given it’s pedigree, I took the test car on the Summit Rd to Gebbies Pass and out to the plains via Coes Ford. The DS3 cruises quietly and feels nimble and agile when confronted with some tricky corners. In my introduction I suggested that DS range cars are just that little bit feisty. The DS3 has firmish suspension, quite removed from mainstream Citroen, and that contributes to the stiff sensation underneath. Riding on sport specification Michelin tyres (205/45 x 17in), there is a lot of grip on offer, and if you add in direct and precise steerage the DS3 could well be considered a genuinely capable handling vehicle. However, when that type of motoring isn’t on the agenda the DS3 will appeal in many other ways. Its French origins come to the fore, its design cues are standouts and while it is just a baby hatchback it has two-tone colouring, and chic features which certainly take it out of the mainstream category. Inside, too, it has avantgarde styling elements. Not that they make driving the car a challenge, they don’t, but just the way the cockpit is laid out is visually different. Space-wise the DS3 could really be considered a four-seater only, there are three seat belts across the rear, but that area is best reserved for those slight of stature. However, on the plus side, there is a respectable under-hatch load space (285-litres), surprisingly it easily accounted for the sizeable Kiddie-family weekly grocery shop. French manufacturers are well renowned for building passion into their cars. At $42,990 it isn’t the most affordable hatchback in today’s market, but if you want style and panache then the DS3 is the car for you.
